Org. Setting and Reporting

This position is located within the Joint Mission Analysis Centre (JMAC) at the African Union-United Nations Hybrid Operation in Darfur (UNAMID). The JMAC is responsible for the management (collection, coordination, analysis and dissemination) of information as a basis for policy development, enhanced planning and decision-making by the Senior Mission Leadership. The Information Analyst reports to the Chief JMAC.

Responsibilities

Within limits of delegated authority, and under the supervision of the Chief JMAC, the Information Analyst will be responsible for, but not limited to, the following duties:

• Assist the Chief JMAC to coordinate and supervise JMAC activities, including the management and processing (collection, collation, analysis and dissemination) of information to provide Senior Mission Leadership with medium and long-term situational analysis in support of decision-making, policy development and planning within the Mission.
• Produce accurate and timely integrated analyses, assessments, maps and other analytical products to support decision-making, policy development and planning by Senior Mission Leadership.
• Provide regular assessments, as directed, on the threats to the achievement of the UNAMID mandate, focusing on the medium and long-term outlook, to help inform Senior Mission Leadership decision-making.
• Develop effective working relationships with UNAMID components, the UNCT and relevant external actors and organizations. Maintain close liaison with the Joint Operation Centre (JOC) and other Mission components to ensure information flow and exchange.
• In consultation with the Chief JMAC and relevant Mission components, ensure the establishment of priorities for information collection and analysis through the development and application of such tools as Priority Information Requirements and Collection Plans.
• Provide briefings to the Mission Leadership Team, senior UN staff and visiting delegations and represent the JMAC in meetings as required.
• Support the Chief JMAC in the supervision and management of the Centre, including recruitment, staff development, training and evaluation.

Education

Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in political science, social sciences, area studies and Middle Eastern languages, international relations, or related field. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Work Experience

A minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience in intelligence or information analysis, political or international affairs, military, police, security, civil affairs, humanitarian affairs, human rights, crisis operations and management, journalism or related field.
Experience in conflict or post-conflict areas is required.
Extensive experience in drafting strategic and operational-level analytical reports and briefs is required.
Professional experience working in the Middle East covering political, socio-economic and/or cultural issues is desirable.
Experience managing a team or an office is desirable.
Previous JMAC experience is desirable.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of the Arabic language is highly desirable.

Assessment

Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.

• This position is temporarily available until 31 December 2020, possibility of extension subject to availability of funds. If the selected candidate is a staff member from the United Nations Secretariat, the selection will be administered as a temporary assignment.
