Description

The Media officer will lead in the co-production of radio shows; produce and build the capacity of journalists from partner radio stations to produce conflict sensitive radio programming, as well as ensure all aspects of reporting on the project's media activities.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Radio Production
  • Lead in the production of radio programs including recording, scripting writing, editing and packaging to meet Search's standards
  • Prepare, produce and/or record interviews (in the field or at the partner studio), news, sound or music for the project
  • Train journalists in:
  • Common Ground journalism techniques to provide them with the skills to produce positive, constructive, inclusive, locally-rooted messages on issues affecting the community
  • Production of constructive narratives that enable communities to address complex conflicts in a non-adversarial and collaborative manner
  • The use of the recording equipment to conduct good interviews
  • Ensuring and upholding editorial integrity on everything that is aired
  • Collaborate with the Program Coordinator to ensure strong linkages between media and outreach activities to achieve the overall objectives of the project
  • Develop a robust media campaign to popularize the radio programs
  • Collaboration with radio station partners
  • Ensure regular contact with the radio stations that participate in Search projects
  • Support radio station partners in the production of radio programming in local languages, in alignment with the Common Ground Approach
  • Provide coaching to journalists of partner radio stations as needed
  • Ensure that feedback and learning from previously recorded programs is built into the next radio program
  • Reporting and capturing results
  • Collaborate with the DM&E Coordinator to monitor the quality of radio programming and gather listeners' feedback
  • Conduct listenership surveys
  • Prepare activity reports in English
  • Participate in monitoring aspects of the program
  • Participate in reflection exercises with program and DM&E staff to analyze findings and contextual updates and adapt programmatic approaches to maximize outreach activities and the overall project's impact
  • Communication
  • Contribute to Search's communication and visibility efforts, including with photos, audio, and video content

Skills & Competencies

  • Minimum Qualifications :
  • Bachelor's degree in Journalism/Media Studies/Mass Communication or a related field from a recognized institution
  • At least three (3) years of journalism or radio production experience
  • Strong mastery of radio editing programs such as Cool Edit Pro, Pro Tools and Adobe Audition
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, as well as social media platforms
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, presentation and effective communication with a variety of stakeholders
  • Ability to maintain professionalism, creativity and enthusiasm while working in a fast-paced, multi-cultural environment with minimal supervision
  • Cultural sensitivity and strong interest in dialogue, peacebuilding and conflict transformation
  • Demonstrated experience designing and implementing mass media campaigns
  • Demonstrated experience of working on the design and implementation of a regular radio program
  • Familiarity with radio program production and editing
  • Experience in linking research to program design and development
  • Fluency in oral and written English
  • Proficiency in local languages is an asset
