UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, is offering an International Consultancy/full time position within the External Relations Unit in our UNHCR Representative Office in Khartoum, Sudan.

UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, in Sudan is seeking a multimedia website editor/writer (consultant) to research, write, film, photograph and edit content for its upcoming country operation website. The multimedia content will engage key audiences, respect protection concerns, and navigate political sensitivities.

Organisational context

The consultant will become part of a team of communications and reporting staff in different parts of the country. S/He will work under the supervision of the Senior External Relations Officer. S/He will be based in Khartoum, with frequent travel inside Sudan.

Duties and responsibilities

• Research, produce and/or edit news and feature stories in text, photo, video from the field for the country website, the country twitter account and global web/Social Media presences, reflecting UNHCR’s communications priorities and key messages.

• Write and edit other content for the above web presences, ensuring that text is accessible, dignified, informative, relevant and interesting and paying close attention to storytelling, messaging, accuracy, tone and house style.

• Collaborate with UNHCR colleagues across the Sudan operation for mission arrangements, research, fact-checking and messaging.

• Post stories and other content to the website via the content management system.

• Monitor web analytics with an eye to strengthening web content in ways that attract and retain visitor interest and improve user journeys. Ensure SEO.

Essential minimum qualifications and professional experience required

• Education: Degree in Communications, Political Science, International Relations or a related field.

• Job experience: Minimum 5 years of relevant (international) job experience with graduate degree (equivalent of a Master’s), 6 years with undergraduate degree (equivalent of a BA/BS) in journalism, communications, marketing or humanitarian work (ideally public information or content production).

• Strong story telling skills.

• Strong understanding of the user journey.

• Knowledge of UNHCR operations mandate an asset.

• Languages: Proficiency in English is required, knowledge of Arabic an asset.

General Requirements:

• Experience producing, editing and disseminating multimedia content for online audiences ideally for media outlets, international brands, political parties, NGOs, or international institutions.

• Proven experience with editing, production, post-production of photo and video material at advanced level.

• Experience using content management systems and other advanced tools for online publishing and distribution of content.

• Experience working in sensitive and fast-moving news, communications and/or fundraising contexts.

• Experience producing and interpreting web or social media analytics to inform strategies and work plans.

• Strong editorial judgement, including ethical and political awareness.

• Advanced understanding of multimedia content, including how it can best be produced, packaged, published and shared on websites, on social media.

• Excellent command of English and highly developed writing and editing skills.

• Excellent computer skills (MS Office, Trello, photo and video editing software).

Location

The Multimedia Website Editor/Writer Consultant will be based in UNHCR Representative Khartoum Office. He/she will might be required to occasionally travel to Field offices within Sudan.

Conditions

This Consultancy is for three months (extension subject to UNHCR organizational need). It is a full-time role with working hours starting from 8.30am to 4.30pm Sunday to Thursday (40 hours per week).
