 Background:

The RH Community Mobiliser will be responsible for the implementation of the IRC’s community health activities in Khartoum health program that will ensure the delivery of technical quality, culturally and sensitive health educational and promotional activities in the IRC’s project targeted areas in Mayo settlement in Khartoum. Through the collaboration with SUDO (S)He will be responsible for closely working with the Community resource persons e.g Community Health Workers (CHW)/TBAs/ Home visitors, Community midwives etc. to creating awareness and linkages between the community and the health teams at the IRC’s health facility level.

 

Position Objectives

  • Develop strategies to improve community acceptance of Primary Health Care (PHC) and Reproductive health (RH) care services and improve access to IRC services.
  • Build the capacity of SUDO’s community mobilisers, Home visitors, community volunteers and traditional birth attendant (TBAs) on PHC & RH topics that resonate with health issues of the target population.

The Position reports to the Health Manager.

 Duties and responsibilities:

She/he will work with a team of IRC supported clinic based service providers (Medical doctor, Nurses, Midwife from the MOH) and together with SUDO’s field based team of community volunteers (CHW)s/TBAS conduct education, mobilization and sensitization activities related to Primary health and Reproductive Health (RH) care in Mayo settlement in Khartoum.

 

Implementation:

The Community Mobilizer will be responsible for the following:

  • Conduct Community health outreach activities to ensure that clear messages are developed and disseminated to the target groups, as well as planned activities are achieved according to work plans.
  • Prepare Community based activities work plans in collaboration with the health team to ensure activities respond to the health needs of the population.
  • Work with the community Resource persons (CHWs/TBAs) to develop work schedules for them that ensure coverage of the project targeted areas

At the clinic level: Organize and ensure Health education (HE), on PHC/RH topics and services, with respect to cultural sensitivity and confidentiality.

Community Based Tasks:

  • Together with SUDO teams, Organize culturally sensitive educational and promotional activities to raise awareness on but not limited to PHC and RH topics/services, including:
  • Family Planning
  • Maternal and Newborn health, Antenatal Care and Postnatal Care.
  • Awareness of STIs/HIV and its prevention.
  • Complications of pregnancy that can lead to maternal deaths and seeking earlier hospital care for the same
  • Referral and guidance for survivors of sexual assault.
  • Immunization, Curative services, Nutrition screening
  • Support SUDO in organizing regular meetings with community representatives and target groups to discuss health related issues and together create solutions to the same.
  • Explores on possibilities for linking up PHC/RH community activities to the health facility while seeking to reach out to ‘hard to reach’ community groups.
  • Support in the development of health educational materials and tools that are culturally sensitive and accepted by the community.

 

Supervision Responsibilities:

  • Support SUDO community health team to provide support supervision to the community volunteers working in Mayo settlement.
  • Provides technical guidance to the community volunteers in Mayo settlement as needed.
  • Support in Conducting regular Technical trainings and refresher courses (formal classroom trainings and on-the-job trainings) to community health workers, community volunteers and traditional birth attendants.
  • Be part of the recruitment of Community health workers, Health Volunteers and Traditional Birth Attendants

 

Monitoring responsibilities

  • Together with the SUDO team Compile records of all the health education/promotional sessions conducted in the field
  • Responsible for compiling timely monthly PHC/RH community mobilization activities reports and data compilation from the community volunteers/TBAs.
  • Provide analyses data on a weekly/monthly basis, feeds information back to the program.

 

Confidentiality:

  • Ensure non-disclosure of any information whatsoever about practices and IRC activities to any other person or organization without permission, except in the normal performance of the service.

Other Duties

  • Consistently and proactively monitor/assess the safety and security of field teams, promptly reporting concerns or incidents to IRC management and liaising with other external parties as required to maintain/enhance the security environment.
  • Other duties as assigned by the supervisor to enable and develop IRC programs.
 Minimum Qualification, Skills and Experience Required:

Work Experience:

  • At least 1 to 2 years’ or more experience working in a health education/promotion and community project, with displaced population is a plus.

 

Demonstrated Skills and Competencies:

  • Familiarity with the local context: language, culture, etc.
  • Sensitivity and diplomacy to  provide education on a variety of Primary health and reproductive health topics
  • Excellent communication skills – especially on topics pertaining to RH
  • Spoken and written English
  • Basic computer Literacy: Word and Excel
  • Able to work remains productive under difficult and high pressure situations with the ability to prioritize effectively, and respects and adheres to deadlines.

 

 

Education:

  • Certificate in Community or social work, Midwifery or Nursing. Higher diploma in Nursing and or Midwifery is an added advantage

.

Language Skills:

  • Arabic, Fluency in English required.

 

Certificates or Licenses:

  • Licenses to practice as a Community mobilizer or if has Health visitor certification in Sudan. Certificate in Nursing/Midwife or community mobilizer – diploma is an added advantage

 

Preferred experience & skills:

  • Preference for candidates with Community health or social work background- Medical, Nursing and or Reproductive Health background and experience will be added advantage.
  • Ability and flexibility to understand the cultural environment and to work well with the local health representatives.
  • Previous experience managing a community volunteer team
  • Must be a team player with excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work displaying patience, compassion and diplomacy.
  • Ability to be innovative, flexible, and adaptive.
  • Ability to work under difficult, high pressure situations.

 

Working Environment:

Primarily the RH Community Mobilizer will be working in the field environment in Mayo settlement, Jabal locality of Khartoum with frequent visit to the IRC supported Health facility to provide Health education and work with Clinic based staff to plan and conduct community awareness sessions.
