Position: Senior Development Officer
Location: Washington D.C.
Status: Full-time, Exempt
Reports to: Managing Director

Position Summary:

The Enough Project and its investigative partner The Sentry are seeking a talented Senior Development Officer.  This person is an experienced professional who serves as a researcher, concept developer, project manager and primary writer in the development of high-value funding and/or partnership proposals to high net worth funders including – but not limited to – individuals, foundations, and foreign governments, with a focus on 5+ figure opportunities to foundations. This person will proactively research and manage a pipeline of primarily foundation prospects with a mission match to The Sentry. This person will serve as a strategic partner with development and mission staff in the creation of funding proposal concepts/projects. This person will develop strategies for grant preparation, writing and submission processes for significant funding from foundations and other funders to support the Sentry’s goals and objectives.

The individual is expected to translate broad goals into achievable steps, set and manage appropriate expectations, handle detailed, complex concepts and projects, and make timely, well-formulated decisions regarding management and development issues. S/he will establish strong and collaborative relationships with the Founding Director, Managing Director, other Sentry leaders, staff, and donors.

The primary responsibilities for this new position are: assist in the development and execution of an overall development strategic plan, manage institutional fundraising process and programs (write and edit grant proposals and reports for foundation and government sources), engage in yearly planning including: goal setting, strategy identification, bench marking and evaluation to support fund development.

Essential Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Works with the Founding Director to develop and maintain a portfolio of high net worth foundations that have interests that align with mission priorities.
  • Works with the Founding Director and Sentry staff to strategically cultivate grant opportunities from qualified foundations as well as high net worth individuals, governments, and other funders.
  • Collaborates with subject matter experts and staff partners to create strategic proposal concepts and, as relevant, related stewardship plans.
  • Crafts well thought out grant proposals that embody the prospects’ interests, align with all funder requirements and showcase the ability of The Sentry to successfully implement, track and accomplish the work.
  • Engages communications department to assist in the development of cultivation materials and proposals for high-value prospects.
  • Manages processes to track reporting/deliverable deadlines, convene partners to prepare required deliverables, develop any necessary reports, and timely submit deliverables to ensure proper stewardship.
  • Works collaboratively with a team approach in all aspects of the position.
  • Supports shared resources including proposal attachments; proposal and report practices and procedures; submitted communications, LOIs, proposals, and reports; templates and samples; and also reviewing, revising, updating and re-writing existing sections of proposals and letters of intent.
  • Have excellent written and analytical skills in order to shape ideas and concepts into sound grant proposals and reports.

Required Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Bachelor’s Degree.
  • 6-8 years’ experience soliciting institutional gifts.
  • Superior grasp of copywriting and grammar.
  • Knowledge of restricted fund accounting principles, procedures, and standards.
  • Demonstrates major gifts competencies: customer focus, strategic mindset, action-oriented, drives results, interpersonal savvy, builds networks, persuades.
  • Ability to analyze, interpret, and communicate complex financial and program delivery data, and translate complex information to a general audience along with ability to analyze and interpret financial data and prepare financial reports, statements and/or projections.
  • Superior writing, communications, organizational, project management, strategy development, and interpersonal skills, as well as, the ability to build relationships with funding program officers.
