 Background:

International Aid Services (IAS) is a non-political and non-profitable international relief and development organization founded in 1989 with the purpose of assisting people in need. IAS in Sudan implements programmes in Southern Kordofan, Western and Southern Darfur and Red Sea with particular focus on water and sanitation.

 

OVERALL PURPOSE

The CDO is expected to be responsible of the capacity building of communities in the designated geographical location towards self-reliance through community mobilization, Sanitation and Hygiene promotion, trainings and community involvements in the project designing and implementation.

 Duties and responsibilities:

Under the direct supervision of the Project Coordinator, the Community Development Officer will be responsible for, but not limited to, the following functions:

 

Programme

  • Lead the identification and prioritization of community needs through Participatory Rural Appraisals (PRAs) and other methodologies,
  • Ensure the efficient and effective sensitization, mobilization and participation of the targeted communities through community meetings, etc.
  • Conduct awareness and trainings on Peace Building
  • Conduct awareness and trainings on GBV and gender mainstreaming
  • Conduct Sanitation programmes (CLTS, CATS, PHAST, CHAST, and training of Sanitation Action Groups (SAG)
  • Conduct Hygiene promotion, Hygiene in schools and all Hygiene programmes.
  • Support the establishment of community groups in IAS operational areas where they are not existent,
  • Sensitize the communities to project potential and community responsibilities,
  • Mobilizing community provided inputs for the projects especially local materials and labour,
  • in coordination with the CMU Coordinator/focal person assess the training needs of the community,
  • Monitor and follow-up in the project progress and impact of the approved community projects
  • Prepare data and reports on all activities carried out,
  • Liaise between the organization and the communities in the areas where projects are implemented.

 

Capacity building

  • Plan and conduct training workshops for communities and selected local partners on core topics such as community development, Gender, peace building, protection, participatory development, Community approaches to total sanitation (CATS, CLTS), financial management, project management as well as cross-cutting themes,
  • Assist community groups in proposal development and report writing
  • Support the local partners to plan, implement and maintain community projects through management support, technical support, on-going monitoring and evaluation projects.

 

Reporting

  • Submit monthly narrative reports and activity reports to the Project Coordinator
  • Participation in the elaboration of the monthly projects reports
 Minimum Qualification, Skills and Experience Required:
  • BSc in public health, social studies, development studies or other relevant field
  • 2-3 years working experience with an international NGO in the humanitarian and development field, preferably in Nyala, South Darfur a strong plus,
  • Fluency in "English and Arabic essential”
  • Proficient in computer programmes such as Word and Excel, power point.

  • Ability to travel around the project areas,
  • Able to work under pressure and with diverse cultures;
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and ability to effectively make presentations.
  • Self-starter and independent thinker;
  • Flexible work style and with an interest in being part of a dynamic and evolving team;
  • Strong interpersonal skills and team player with the ability to build relationships with communities, staff and partners at all levels.

 

WORK CONDITIONS:

  • Based on South Darfur Nyala. The position requires frequent travel to field within the state
