Org. Setting and Reporting

This position is located within the African Union/United Nations Hybrid Operation in Darfur (UNAMID). The Air Operations Assistant will be based in El Fasher. The Air Operations Assistant reports to the designated Chief of Unit in Aviation Section.

Responsibilities

Within delegated authority, the Air Operations Assistant will carry out the following duties:

• Plans and coordinates air transportation activities in accordance with the Standard Operating Procedures, UN directives, Department of Peacekeeping Operations (DPKO) Aviation Manual, UN Aviation Standards for Peacekeeping and Humanitarian Air Transport Operations (UN AVSTADS), ICAO standards and recommended practices and the host country's Aeronautical Information Publications (AIPs).
• Provides inputs to the management for the efficient, effective and safe use of the UN air assets.
• Monitors technical and safety performance of the UN air assets.
• Liaises with relevant aviation authorities for the coordination of flight clearances.
• Colllects and verifies Aircraft Use Reports (AURs), fuel and other invoices.
• Assists in processing performance assessment and contract completion reports.
• Corrects aviation safety deficiencies.
• Controls documents and ensures that SOPs, policies, guidelines and procedures are in place and easily accessible.
• Assists the Chief Aviation Officer in preparing the aviation budget and aviation performance reports.
• Performs other related duties as required.

Education

High School Diploma or equivalent is required. Technical or vocational certificate in Air Transportation, Aviation Safety Management, Air Traffic Control or graduation from an equivalent military establishment is required.

Work Experience

At least 6 years of progressively responsible experience in aviation including at least 2 years of experience in an occupation directly related to air transport operations.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required.

Assessment

Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.
