Description

Danish Demining Group (DDG) is a specialized unit within DRC that focuses on community safety programming. DDG strives to identify safety and security needs from the perspective of those living in conflict areas and to help them find non-violent solutions. These include community engagement and violence reduction, programming that specifically seeks to engage communities in addressing root causes of conflict and local safety and security challenges.

DRC has been working in Darfur to provide protection assistance, with a focus on GBV prevention and response, food security and emergency shelter and NFI support to vulnerable and conflict affected populations including IDPs, returnees and host communities. In order to increase the conflict sensitivity of implemented activities and have stronger community engagement with focus on community safety and conflict management, DDG’s community safety programming is being introduced into the ongoing DRC programming in Darfur.

 

The Community Engagement (CE) Specialist, is primarily responsible for organizing and providing community safety training including community mapping, conflict analysis and conflict management trainings to community outreach volunteer (COV) networks, mentor and supervise their ongoing conflict assessments and community safety and social cohesion activities.

The CE specialist will support the DRC mobile protection teams in carrying out conflict assessments in newly accessible areas to inform community engagement and ensure conflict sensitivity of all implemented activities.

 Duties and responsibilities:
Responsibilities:

  • Organize and conduct trainings and workshops on community safety (community mapping and conflict analysis) and conflict management
  • Support to designing and/or updating training methodology, content and materials
  • Mentor and support the Community Outreach Volunteer networks in ongoing conflict analysis
  • Assist the COV networks in updating information on communities and stakeholders
  • Support the identification of community safety initiatives to strengthen social cohesion and prevent community conflict and their implementation
  • Maintain regular communication with Community Outreach Volunteer networks for mentoring and reporting
  • Establish and maintain linkages among relevant stakeholders
  • Be the focal point for community safety and conflict analysis in the project area
  • Work closely with the DRC mobile protection teams in carrying out conflict assessments in newly accessible areas, ensure that they are updated and shared with relevant DRC staff
  • Provide guidance and recommendations on conflict sensitivity to DRC and implementing partners
  • Update the line manager on any information related to conflict, safety and security.
  • Keep the Protection team leader and line manager updated on the progress of the activities and any issues that may arise during the course of the implementation that need senior managers’ attention
  • Support the MEAL department in generating qualitative and quantitative data to document milestones of project progress and submit weekly, monthly and quarterly updates as required.
  • Promote a culture of learning with the team and actively share challenges and lessons learned
  • Any other tasks assigned by the line manager.

 

 Minimum Qualification, Skills and Experience Required:

Education/qualifications:

•         University degree in Social Sciences, Political law or any other relevant degree

•         Qualified females are strongly encouraged to apply.

 

Experience and Competencies

•         At least 3 years of work experience in conflict management, conflict analysis, community safety or other relevant area.

•         Experience in developing and implementing mediation training.

•         Experience working in the NGO sector

•         Strong analytical and technical skills on community safety and conflict management.

•         Knowledge of and experience working with IDPs/returnees in Sudan.

•         Ability to clearly express one’s thoughts, to analyze and present information clearly and concisely.

•         Ability to set priorities and to work independently and as part of a team.

•         Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
