The World Food Programme (WFP) is the leading humanitarian organization saving lives and changing lives, delivering food assistance in emergencies and working with communities to improve nutrition and build resilience. We are currently seeking to fill for candidates to participate in the PD Summer Internship Programme 2020 in the Policy and Programme Department (PD).
The position will be based in Monitoring and Evaluation unit, Khartoum, Sudan. The internship will be typically for the period of at least 3 months during May/June to August/ September 2020.
Brief description of WFP activities and Monitoring and Evaluation unit in Khartoum in WFP Sudan:
WFP Sudan has the potential to reach millions of food insecure people across Sudan - with a total of 4 million people assisted in 2018. WFP Sudan, one of the largest and complex operations for WFP globally, is currently rolling out its five-year Country Strategic Plan (2019-2023), which aims to provide emergency assistance through a hybrid approach (cash, food and vouchers), along with life-changing types of programme (Nutrition, Resilience and School Feeding).
The candidate is expected to support the development and implementation of Monitoring, Review and Evaluation Plans aligned to WFP corporate standards to generate quality evidence on the lives of beneficiaries and inform policy, strategy and programme design and implementation. This includes coordinating monitoring activities, supporting the management of decentralized evaluations and providing technical support to the Country Office (CO) and Sub Offices (SO) to improve the efficiency and dissemination of the monitoring results.

Duties and responsibilities
Under the direct supervision of the Head of Monitoring and Evaluation, the PD Summer Intern will perform the following duties:
- Provide inputs to the development of Monitoring, Review and Evaluation plans that will provide the most relevant and strategic information toward achieving results
- Contribute to evidence-based decision-making on programme design and implementation, notably through making monitoring, review and evaluations findings accessible, developing innovative, user-friendly and informative products
- Contribute to building M&E capacity of WFP staff and partners through training and information sharing
- Support in addressing recommendations from monitoring, reviews and evaluations to ensure that follow-up actions are taken as required
- Support technical in innovations and improvement in mobile data collection and visualization of the collected data on monthly basis
- Take responsibility for integrating protection and gender perspectives in all areas of work, to ensure equal participation of women and men
- Support line manager in ensuring that CO monitoring systems and tools are in place and compliant with corporate standards including the minimum monitoring requirements (MMR), standard operational procedures (SOP) and establishment of baselines and targets in alignment with the updated corporate results framework (CRF).
- Draft regular monitoring reports on status of results and implementation progress and contribute to the data analysis.
Qualifications and experience
- Currently enrolled in a master’s degree OR a recent graduate of a master’s degree (graduated within the last 6 months)
- Excellent English verbal and writing skills, Arabic is desirable.
- Proficiency in MS Office, especially in Excel spreadsheets and Word documents
- Desirable: any data visualization software such as Tableau, Power BI
Working Languages
Working knowledge of English (proficiency/level C) is required, and Arabic is desired.
Supervision (Level/Methods of Supervision)
Under the direct supervision of Head of Monitoring and Evaluation unit, the incumbent will be provided with close mentoring, guidance and technical supervision. Performance planning and reviews as well as learning and development discussions will be elemental part of the supervision. The Head of Programme Performance & Support of the P will be the second-level supervisor. With the support of a comprehensive induction package and assignment of a buddy/mentor, the intern will rapidly become a productive member of the team.
Training components
Throughout their assignment WFP interns have access to an industry leading learning platform, WeLearn. Depending on opportunities and availability of funds, he/she may participate in WFP workshops or seminars, as appropriate.
Learning Elements
At the end of the assignment, the Intern should have:
- General understanding of WFP overall operations
- Good overview of what is M&E in a big organization and how tasks are divided
- Good understanding of the importance and relevancy of monitoring findings and why it is essential to follow up on them
- Familiarization with the technical tools used in the team for questionnaire designing, data collection and reporting

- Living conditions in Khartoum, Sudan
Sudan is classified as a lower-middle income country; however, the cessation of South Sudan, regional and national conflicts and associated displacements, weather related crises, low agricultural productivity, and structural poverty have stiffed progress and made Sudan one of the most food-insecure countries in the world.
Throughout 2019, the country’s economic crisis underpinned waves of political unrest, leading to the fall of former President Omar Al-Bashir after three decades in power. The signing of the Political and Constitutional Agreements soon after his demise has left a more positive outlook for a longer-term solution between civilian and military groups.
Terms and Conditions:
- The PD intern will be paid a monthly stipend of approximately USD US$ 500 per month as a contribution towards basic subsistence costs.
- WFP is not responsible for living expenses, arrangements for accommodation, necessary visas and related costs.
- WFP will reimburse travel ticket for candidates who are nationals of developing countries and are pursuing their studies in their home country.
- WFP will recognize candidates’ educational credentials from recognised institutions that have been certified by competent international or national authorities such as the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) or Ministries of Education.
- Candidates who bear any of the following relations to WFP staff members are not eligible to apply: sons, daughters, brothers or sisters.
