Sudan, surrounded by the Central African Republic, Chad, Egypt, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Libya and South Sudan, positioned next to East, West, South and North Africa, is surrounded by complex conflicts in an unpredictable, volatile and rapidly evolving region. Sudan is by size the third biggest country in Africa, with a diverse population of around 42 million people. Sudan's children make up half of the total population, and the past two decades have seen their lives significantly improve: fewer girls and boys are dying before their fifth birthday, primary school attendance is increasing, immunization coverage is high and the country remains polio free. Still, millions of children continue to suffer from protracted conflict in Darfur, the Kordofan's, and Blue Nile, from seasonal natural disasters, malnutrition and disease outbreaks, and from under-investment in basic social services. More than three million of Sudan's school aged children are not in the classroom. UNICEF has been in Sudan since 1952 and continues with a presence in 12 of Sudan's 18 states.

How can you make a difference?

To support the coordination, planning, implementation and monitoring of the inter-agency peace-building project in Central Darfur (West Jabal Marra and Umdukhun Localities) (Position 1), South Darfur (Gereida Locality) (Position 2), and other States as required.

Basic objectives of consultancy

Provide support to the effective planning, monitoring, reporting and evaluation of the Peace-building Project. 

• Support UNICEF’s leadership of the PBF baseline survey in coordination with other agencies and partners (including field trips as required)
• Support the development of a quarterly monitoring plan for UNICEF
• Support joint and/or independent monitoring of UNICEF-supported activities
• Support and consolidate monitoring and progress reports
• Support the drafting of briefings, workshop reports and donor reports
• Support translation of relevant documents and provide interpretation (Arabic/English) as needed
• Organize TA, security clearance, etc. whenever necessary

Lead the coordination of the PBF with all relevant stakeholders at Locality and State level as well as with Peace-building Secretariat and internally with UNICEF management and all Darfur Field Offices

• Support the development of an inter-agency coordination plan (including timeline)
• Support the organization of coordination meetings with various stakeholders
• Support the documentation and distribution of meeting reports and outcomes
• Support all other aspects of coordination as required

Provide ongoing technical support to the implementation of the Peace-building Project across UNICEF, implementing partners and stakeholders to support timeliness and quality of activities

• Support the updating of the UNICEF conflict analysis as required
• Support coordination and implementation of peace-building-conflict sensitivity capacity building activities for UNICEF and partners
• Support PBF project communications and outreach activities
• Support development of KM materials

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…

• • A University degree in one of the following fields: social sciences, peace-building, public administration, law, international relations, business administration or other related disciplines. Advanced degree in one of the mentioned disciplines is an asset.
  • Minimum 2 years professional work experience in peace-building or humanitarian and development programming at the field level (including coordination, monitoring and reporting)
  • Demonstrable knowledge of peace-building and or conflict related programming practice
  • Experience in Darfur an added advantage
  • Fluency in writing, reading and speaking English and Arabic
  • Strong negotiating, communication and advocacy skills
  • Computer skills, including various office applications
  • Ability to work and live in difficult environment
