Position: Investigator/Sr. Investigator (South Sudan), The Sentry
Location: Washington D.C.
Status:  Full-time, Non-exempt
Reports to: Investigations Director

Position Summary:

The Sentry’s South Sudan Investigator/Sr. Investigator works closely with the Investigations Director, the Director of Policy and Analysis, and the Managing Director to plan and execute investigations for South Sudan. The Sentry is an investigative initiative launched by the Enough Project in 2015 to counter the financing of conflict and mass atrocities in Africa. This position works to ensure that investigative efforts support the Enough Project’s policy goals.

Essential Responsibilities and Tasks

Investigations and Outreach

  • Conceptualize, plan and execute public-facing investigations into financial crimes and corruption linked to violence in South Sudan;
  • Serve as lead author of public-facing investigative reports;
  • Develop proposals for each investigation and public-facing Sentry report for South Sudan;
  • Help shape priorities for data acquisition and source development for investigations;
  • Help develop Sentry-specific investigative methods;
  • Help develop partnerships, as appropriate, with investigators, media and NGOs relevant to The Sentry’s work, and maintain responsibility for contracts with such partners;
  • Represent The Sentry at relevant meetings and with the media, specifically concerning investigative findings;
  • Contribute to dossiers and other written materials provided by The Sentry to governments or the private sector;
  • Routinely engage with sources, law enforcement, intelligence agencies and the private sector, as appropriate;
  • Contribute to development and fundraising initiatives.

Required Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Ability

  • Excellent writing and editing skills;
  • Knowledge of current issues facing South Sudan;
  • Solid understanding of financial crimes and corruption;
  • Experience producing hard-hitting investigative reports;
  • Ability to examine and analyze public records and financial documents from an investigative perspective;
  • Experience using open-source investigative methods;
  • Ability to travel and conduct field-based investigations in difficult reporting environments;
  • Experience identifying, cultivating and interviewing primary sources;
  • Capacity to develop leads for new investigations;
  • Ability to engage with or work alongside journalists.

Preferred Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Ability

  • Prior experience conducting research in South Sudan strongly preferred;
  • In-depth knowledge of or experience working or living in East or Central Africa;
  • Ability to develop or conceptualize multimedia content to supplement written investigative products;
  • Arabic skills preferred but not required.
